St. Silas Church is one of Melbourne’s best located and most beautiful churches. Situated close to the city,  the beach and the Bay, the church  is unique for its characher, colour and light.

For a wedding in an Anglican Church, the celebrant must be an Anglican priest, appropriately licensed and registered. Normally the Vicar officiates at  weddings.  Clergy of other traditions are most welcome to assist.

Christian marriage includes the taking of wedding vows in Church, and asking for God’s help, protection and blessing. This adds to the solemnity of the occasion as each partner makes loving commitment to the other. We welcome those who wish to take this step at the Anglican Parish of the Parks.

Getting Married

When a couple has decided to be married, there are many things to be done. All weddings have to comply with the regulations in the Commonwealth Marriage Act. There are forms to be filled out and preparations made, with which we can assist.

 Two Specific Church Requirements

  1. Christian marriage normally requires that at least one partner should be baptised as a Christian.
  2. Permission from the Bishop is required for the marriage of a person who has been divorced.

First Things

As early as possible, a date and a time need to be agreed- check to ensure the  chosen date is available- and a non refundable $200 deposit paid. Normally weddings are not held during Lent, the 40 days before Easter, and there are  no weddings conducted on the Saturday between Good Friday and Easter Day..

 Marriage Preparation

Some preparation meetings are held at  convenient times for this most significant step. These include three sessions of a short program known as “Prepare.” From “Prepare” a couple can get a clear indication of  the  strengths in their relationship, as well perhaps of areas that might need some further mutual discussion. Obviously anything that can help avoid adding to the sad statistics of marriage breakdown is worthwhile.

Couples find participating in “Prepare” helpful and thought provoking. The necessary forms are completed at this time.

 Music

Music is an important part of the wedding ceremony and we have a fine musical tradition. We have a first class pipe organ, and  piano and soloists are available by arrangement. Music is an important feature of being married at the Parish of the Parks, and the Organist is happy to discuss various options. Recorded music is appropriately kept for the reception.
